Short Story

Here’s a short story,

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face she inquired, “How heavy is this glass of water?” The answer called out ranged from 8 oz to 20 oz. She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, its not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”
She continued, “The stress and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them for a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything.” Always remember to put the glass down.

Don’t play a war in your mind, just let it go. πŸ˜‰

Beautifully said. Never once have I heard this perspective, yet when I think about it, it feels so true.

I am infamous for letting little things bother me collectively, even though they mean nothing to me on their own. Something always feels as if it “adds up” instead of just happening. Maybe it doesn’t just “add up”, though. Maybe I’m just holding on to it too long, thinking that it’s okay because it’s not so heavy, and by the time I realize how long I’ve been holding on to it my arm is tired and aching, all the while I’m holding two other glasses as well.

At what point is enough enough though?

    For now,

    1. As per me, we should get the rid of over thinking right from the word go! As worries just don’t do anything good, they just eat away the happy moments too. πŸ˜‰

  4. Love this one. It’s similar to what you say to your children as they grow – “I held you for 9 months, I continued to hold you, I didn’t let go even when you resisted, I held tight even when you left and I will always hold you in my heart when I can’t hold you in my arms, the is no weight/wait”.

    1. Yes, but it is one of the toughest lesson to learn. It’s hard for oneself to realize that theirs nothing much to hold on.

      1. I agree.. It’s very tough but the truth is we don’t own anything in this world.. Everything is temporary including us! I hope I as well accept this truth along with everyone! And thanks☺

      2. Agree. πŸ™‚
But the problem is, the heart never forgets.
And deep down everyone already knows the truth. πŸ™‚
Thanks Bhumi for putting up. πŸ™‚
