I hope you are doing great at your end and having an awesome holiday season. 🙂  The year 2015 is about to bid adieu, time to thank for everything it gave us. So, before you get ready with your resolutions for year 2016 and plan out the party for New Year’s eve, I would like to share something similar to what I shared starting this year (Post: Slap Her!).

Recently, I came across a video which depicts how the society and its culture encourages violence against women.
In the five minute video, a unborn baby girl tells her father about all of the harassment and abuse she will suffer at the hands of men during her lifetime.

I won’t go into details and would like to share this video asking you to just give your valuable 5 minutes.

Bye Bye Orkut: Google to Shut Down Its First Social Network

Do you remember when was the last time you wrote a scrap? When was the last time you logged into your Orkut account. Ya, In fact, I also don’t remember the last time I used Orkut.

Orkut, Google’s first social networking site, will cease to exist after September, with the Internet giant deciding to shut down the service launched 10 years ago. Brazil & India were the most attracted towards this social site. I remember, I was never into Orkut that much but I used to see the craze in people around me, my friends & relatives. How eager they used to be when students of my class were heading back home. The excitement was just for using Orkut & interacting with different people.

Orkut was launched in 2004, the same year when Facebook was founded. Facebook is now the world’s largest social network with 1.28 billion users. Suddenly, people were talking about how Facebook was the “next big thing”. And before you knew it, people were joining Facebook, adding it to their social networking collection. Preferences changed in such a way that people visited Facebook once every day, and Orkut once a year.

One of the most interesting features of Orkut was the who viewed your profile option. Essentially, a user would get to know if someone had visited his or her profile. Users would be excited at the prospect of a stranger visiting their profile. Eventually, Orkut did come up with an option where you could prevent someone from seeing whether you had visited one’s profile – the only catch was that the same option would apply to you as well.

My profile has less than 100 scraps & very few photos. Many Orkut users will archive their pictures and details from their profile, I intend to leave mine behind as a token of thanks.

Orkut has fallen down rapidly, but it will always be credited with bringing us our first, raw social networking experience. To quote the Google blog post that announced Orkut was going obsolete this September: “Orkut helped shape life online before people really knew what ‘social networking’ was.”
